Socialize Your Puppy!!! In the early months of life around 7 weeks to upwards of 10 months of age, your puppy will go through a stage of mental growth development that will shape his personality for his life, SO...as soon as you have finished his puppy shots, (6, 8, 10to 12, and at 14 to 16 weeks of age, Rabies at 17 weeks) give him lots of time to visit new surroundings and meet as many humans and other animals in a SAFE controlled situation. One of the best ways to do this and help you to learn to teach him is to enroll your puppy in a "Puppy Kindergarten" class. Check with your Veterinarian or community education program or call the American Kennel Club Customer Service at 919-233-9767 to find a class in your area.
Puppy proof your home! Some of the things you might look for are: Electrical cords, as a shock can be fatal to your puppy, Keep medicines out of reach of your puppy. Keep household chemicals such as cleaners, polishes, poisons, and speaking of poisons, not all plants are good for your pet, such as mistletoe, philodendron, daffodil horse chestnut morning glory etc. If you suspect your pet has got into something poisonous call your vet.
Most dogs like crates! they think it is a den and they can help with the housebreaking as most dogs do not want to soil their "home". They will very quickly consider the crate as a den. Get one that will give your dog room to stand up, lay down in and so he can turn around in, if you buy a "large crate place a divider in it because if it is too large they may use one end to "go" in, and the other to sleep in. Remember a puppy as a rule of thumb can only "hold it" for a hour per month of life (ie 4 months old, about 4 hours) even though the puppy will learn fast when its time to go its time to go, if he does soil the crate do not harshly reprimand him but take him out to the area where he is to go. Until he is 6 to 9 months of age, he may have an accident overnight, Remember first thing in releasing him from the crate take him straight out to "his area". It is part of training him. And never use the crate as a punishment area but it should be a place for sleeping, to relax and just get away from the world.
